Elden Ring is a tapestry woven with tragic demigods, each vying for power in their own twisted ways. Among them, Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, stands out as a particularly grotesque and compelling figure. His pursuit of godhood led him down a path of ultimate heresy, culminating in a nightmarish fusion with an ancient, insatiable serpent. More than just a boss, Rykard represents a chilling rejection of the Golden Order and a descent into utter depravity, leaving a lasting impression on any Tarnished who dares to challenge him in the fiery depths of Mt. Gelmir.
Before his monstrous transformation, Rykard was Praetor Rykard, a son of Radagon and Rennala, and thus a half-sibling to Radahn and Ranni. Unlike his formidable siblings, Rykard wasn't celebrated for immense strength or unparalleled wit. Instead, he harbored a deep-seated ambition and a disdain for the rigid doctrines of the Golden Order and the Greater Will. This discontent fueled his interest in the forgotten practices and "ancient hexes" of Mt. Gelmir, which he diligently studied and brought back into use as new forms of sorcery. He established Volcano Manor, a seemingly lavish but sinister stronghold, where he gathered the "Recusants" Tarnished who renounced the Erdtree and dedicated themselves to hunting other Tarnished, particularly those striving to become Elden Lord.
Rykard's true blasphemy, however, ran far deeper than mere political rebellion or the revival of forbidden magic. Lore suggests he played a crucial role in the Night of the Black Knives, the devastating event where Godwyn the Golden, a beloved demigod, was assassinated. Ranni, his half-sister, rewarded Rykard with the Blasphemous Claw, an item capable of deflecting Maliketh's power, hinting at his direct involvement and the extreme nature of his actions. This act, a direct defiance of the gods, solidified his title as the "Lord of Blasphemy."
Yet, even this wasn't enough for Rykard. Driven by an insatiable lust for power and a desire to "devour the very gods," he sought a more radical means to achieve his ultimate goal. He discovered the God-Devouring Serpent, an ancient, colossal entity slumbering beneath Mt. Gelmir, long worshipped by a forgotten, sacrificial cult. In an act of unthinkable heresy, Rykard willingly offered himself to this serpent, allowing it to consume him, his Great Rune and all. This grotesque fusion transformed him into the colossal, grotesque being the Tarnished encounters: a monstrous amalgamation of man and beast, a living embodiment of his blasphemous ambition.
The journey to Rykard is itself a testament to the unsettling nature of Volcano Manor. Players can choose to either undertake a series of assassination missions for Lady Tanith, Rykard's loyal consort, eventually being teleported to his chamber, or fight their way through the manor's labyrinthine corridors, filled with grotesque Man-Serpents and other abominations born from Rykard's twisted experiments. Both paths lead to the same unsettling realization: Volcano Manor is not merely a place of rebellion, but a crucible of horrific transformation, fueled by Rykard's ever-growing hunger.
The boss fight against Rykard is a two-phase spectacle, unique in its reliance on a specific gimmick weapon. As the Tarnished enters the arena, they are immediately confronted by the God-Devouring Serpent, a titanic serpent coiled within a lake of molten lava. Crucially, nearby lies the "Serpent-Hunter" great spear. This weapon, specifically designed to combat the serpent, is essential for the fight. Its unique weapon art, "Great-Serpent Hunt," creates a powerful gust of wind that launches the player forward, delivering massive damage and often staggering the beast from a safe distance. Without this weapon, the fight would be an almost insurmountable challenge.
The first phase sees the Tarnished battling the massive serpent, dodging its sweeping attacks, venomous spits, and magma upheavals. The rhythm of the fight revolves around timing the Serpent-Hunter's powerful jabs, chipping away at the immense health bar. Once the God-Devouring Serpent is defeated, the true horror of Rykard is revealed. From the serpent's maw, Rykard himself emerges, a grotesque figure fused into the serpent's head, wielding the Blasphemous Blade and igniting the entire arena with torrents of fire and exploding skulls.
Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy, is a whirlwind of chaotic destruction in this second phase. He unleashes flaming sword slashes, erupting magma geysers, and relentless volleys of explosive skulls. The Serpent-Hunter remains the key, its powerful attacks still effective against his true form. The fight becomes a test of endurance and precise dodging, navigating the treacherous lava and avoiding Rykard's wide-reaching assaults while continuously unleashing the spear's potent strikes.
Upon Rykard's defeat, the unsettling saga of Volcano Manor largely concludes. His Great Rune is acquired, a testament to his unique power, and the loyal Lady Tanith can later be found morbidly consuming his remains in a final, deranged act of devotion, believing it will allow him to be reborn. Rykard's fate is a stark reminder of the corrupting influence of unchecked ambition in the Lands Between, a demigod who, in his pursuit of godhood, became something far more terrifying and utterly blasphemous. His legacy is not one of glory, but of a monstrous fusion, a chilling testament to the lengths some will go to defy destiny.
