Madden 26: The Best Safeties to Use Right Now

This guide covers the top strong safeties and free safeties in Madden 26 as of the current meta. To acquire these top-rated players and build your ideal secondary, you can buy Mut 26 coins to speed up your team assembly. Recommendations are organized by price tier: budget, value, and top-tier. Only players rated 96 overall and above are considered.

Strong Safeties

Budget Options (96 Overall)

Isaiah Polamalu is a strong budget option. He has all team chemistries, 96 speed, and stands 6'4". If he receives an upgrade later in the year, such as a fan appreciation card, he has the potential to become very good.

Troy Polamalu is available for free through the AANHPI Heritage Month events. There is no reason not to use him if you need a budget strong safety.

Jeremy Chinn is the best budget beast among the 96 overall strong safeties. He appears frequently in budget beast discussions. Currently, 96 overall cards are overpriced because of the 98 to 99 overall set, but Jeremy Chinn will eventually drop below 100,000 coins. At that price, he is an excellent buy.

Avoid Jalen Hurts at strong safety. Cam Newton is a solid budget option, but Jeremy Chinn is better. The same comparison applies to Ken Houston, Keith Jackson, and Mark Barron. Jeremy Chinn outperforms all of them.

Value Options (97 Overall)

Tyler Newsome is a sleeper card. He is very good, but Jeremy Chinn remains the better choice.

Kyle Hamilton is highly recommended. All Team of the Year cards have been some of the best budget beasts in the game. If you want to build a budget theme team, build the Team of the Year theme team. These cards have baked-on abilities and provide a plus-two speed boost. With 30 components you get the base boost, and with 60 components you receive an additional plus-one speed. You will be outmatched on abilities eventually, but the cards remain solid.

Cam Curl has all team chemistries. His abilities are not the greatest, but he reaches 99 speed if you have speed crystals.

Denzel Pineman actually has 99 speed. His zone coverage is only 96, which is not ideal, but he gets a decent enough stat stack to be usable.

Avoid Budda Baker and Tyler Newsome among the 97 overall options. Use any other 97 instead.

Top-Tier Options (98 Overall)

Bo Jackson is a usable card. The issue is that you need his LTD token to take him from good to great. Most players do not have the Bo Jackson token, which limits his value.

Avoid Patrick Chung.

Harold Carmichael cards are defined by their size advantage. Carmichael is extremely tall, which creates mismatches. His abilities are from the season six buckets, which are outdated, but his height makes him effective regardless. The gold plated Carmichael card cost 6 million coins and remains very good. He still sees play even months after his release.

Kam Chancellor is the better choice over John Lynch.

Jamal Adams is a solid card. He was good when he released and performs well on a theme team. His abilities are the main limitation, but he is fine.

Caleb Downs is a good 98 overall draft card.

Joey Browner is an excellent budget beast at 98 overall. Use him over Delpit, who has good size but inferior performance.

Elite Options (99 Overall)

The Nick E. Man War-ed Gauntlet card is overpriced and not worth the cost.

Ed Too Tall Jones cannot be obtained anymore.

Brian Branch requires a Redux card and is significantly overpriced.

Kyle Dugger has 97 speed. K'Von Wallace has passive X-factors, but better options exist.

Rob Gronkowski at strong safety has baked-on Avalanche. If you have the token, he becomes significantly better. Gronkowski with Avalanche is a strong choice.

Calvin Johnson has 98 speed and stands 6'5". He has been discussed frequently as a top option.

Avoid C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Eric Weddle. Both are smaller safeties and less effective.

Jared Allen is the best value option among 99 overall strong safeties. For under 400,000 coins, you get a top-tier safety with 99 speed. He has all team chemistries, so you can easily chem him up to 99.

The ranking of top strong safeties is as follows. Harold Carmichael is the best option. Jared Allen is second. Calvin Johnson is third. Rob Gronkowski is fourth. Brian Dawkins cannot be obtained yet. He will not be available until week three of the Theme Team Surge promo.

Free Safeties

The free safety position currently has fewer viable options than strong safety. The best strategy is to use strong safeties at the free safety position.

96 Overall Options

Night Train Lane was good when he dropped and remains good to this day. He is the best among the 96 overall free safeties.

Paul Krause held up well for a long time and is worth a mention.

Harrison Smith has 96 speed, is 6'2", and performs well on a theme team.

Rod Woodson is better than expected but is only 6 feet tall. At this stage of the game, you want taller safeties. Kevin Byard is usable, but Rod Woodson is worth the extra 40,000 coins.

Jeremy Chinn, discussed earlier as a strong safety, is also a better choice than most budget free safeties.

98 Overall Options

Malachi Starks is a good card. Buy his Redux version rather than the 98 overall version, which is too expensive.

Malik Hooker is a sleeper card. For 200,000 coins or below, you get a solid 6'2" option. You lose abilities, but the size and price make up for it.

Cole Bishop and Jaquan Brisker are both very good. Bishop is the better card, but Brisker is more expensive for unknown reasons. Choose Bishop.

Avoid smaller safeties such as Winfield (5'10"), Gino Stone (5'10"), and similar players. Size matters significantly at safety.

Premium Options

Shawn T is a solid buy for around 700,000 coins. He has Ring of Honor or glowing X-factors. He will likely receive a Redux card eventually.

Ed Reed is essentially a rental. He is not a long-term solution.

Ted Hendricks costs 1.8 million coins, which is expensive, but he is the best free safety in the game.

Ronnie Lott is your value play at free safety. Jeremy Chinn is a worse version of Ronnie Lott. Chinn is three inches taller but has significantly worse abilities.

Avoid Haason Reddick and Xavier Woods. They are overpriced and will not deliver the performance you need.

Final Recommendations

For strong safety, the top choices in order are Harold Carmichael, Jared Allen, Calvin Johnson, and Rob Gronkowski. For budget builds, Jeremy Chinn and Isaiah Polamalu are excellent picks. For free safety, use strong safeties in that position. Ted Hendricks is the best pure free safety if you have the coins. If you need additional resources to afford these top-tier players, you can find reliable Madden 26 coins for sale at MMOEXP to help complete your roster. Ronnie Lott is the best value. Avoid smaller safeties under 6'2" regardless of their other stats.
